Hyundai reveals new automatic transmissions and turbo engines

The South Korean auto maker Hyundai has revealed its 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox for the first time at the 2014 Paris motor show. According to the company officials, the new transmission system offers an enhanced fuel economy and CO2 emission in the review of standard 6-gear automatic gearbox. Along with, it improves the acceleration performance to offer a powerful drive.

Sources close to the development said that this gearbox contains 2 dry clutches with an actuator for each clutch. In this transmission system, the output produced by the engine is independently transferred into the even and odd gear train, which ensures that the system is ready to shift the next gear without the interruption of torque. For decent results, actuator has been also placed, which runs on an electric motor, whereas the external maintains the noise vibration harshness levels.

The South Korean car maker has also showcased 2 new turbocharged petrol engines, including a 1-litre three-cylinder mill which will be equipped in the new i20 hatchback being sold in the international markets. Termed as the part of new generation engines, both 1-litre and 1.4-litre units will belong to the Kappa family. The 1-litre engine is based on the existing Kappa 1-litre MPI unit, which has a displacement of 998cc, although it will feature numerous technological advancements, including direct petrol injection and a small turbocharger. Sources said that this engine will churn out a maximum power of 118 bhp and 170 Nm.

Reportedly, this engine will feature an electronically controlled wastegate to improve the flow with low-end torque and throttle response. There will be a 6-hole GDI injector, pressured to a more than normal 200 bar, which will secure a clean combustion and enhance the fuel economy and emission levels. This engine uses a split cooling phenomenon to work under different temperatures. In order to reduce the size of engine as much as possible, the exhaust manifold is fitted into the cylinder head.

On the other hand, the Kappa 1.4-litre T-GDI unit happens to be the successor of Gamma 1.4-litre unit. Weighing just 87 kg, the base weight of the new engine measure 14 kg less that the old powerhouse. Interestingly, this new engine is also compact than the previous generation engine and incorporates a high-pressure single-scroll turbocharger fitted in the exhaust manifold. This terminology enhances the throttle response time and low-end torque.
