      Hyundai India records 15 per cent sales increase in January 2012

      Exports output increases by 23 per cent, domestic sales go up by 12 per cent

      In January 2012, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) registered a 15.2 per cent increase in total sales, amounting to 49,901 units as compared to 43,316 units it sold in the same month last year. The domestic sales of the company increased by 11.85 per cent, as the second largest car manufacturer of India sold 33,900 units in the first month of this year versus 30,306 vehicles sold during the same time in 2011. The company consolidated its position as the largest car exporter of India by producing 16,001 vehicles for foreign markets in January 2012. This represents a 22.9 per cent year-over-year growth over the 13,010 units it had exported in the same month in 2011.

      Talking about the company's sales in January 2012, Arvind Saxena, Director Marketing and Sales, HMIL, commented “The year seems to have started on a positive note, domestic sales are showing some buoyancy. But we will have to cautiously watch how this momentum picks up in the months ahead.”

      In the A2 segment (Eon, Santro, i10, i20), the company sold 44,960 units in January 2012. Likewise, it was able to roll out 4,797 units in the A3 segment (Accent and Verna) and 144 units of Santa Fe, its Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), during the same period.

      Established in 1998, HMIL is a completely-owned subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) and an essential part of the Korean automotive giant's export plans. The company successfully exported 1 million units within 10 years of commencing production and has been the country's biggest car exporter for six consecutive years. Presently, HMC export vehicles to over 120 nations based in EU, Africa, Middle East, Latin America and the Asia Pacific through its Indian subsidiary. HMIL produces eight passenger cars in the domestic market; including Eon, Santro, i10 and i20 models in the A2 segment, Accent and Verna in A3 segment and Santa Fe in the SUV segment.

      The company has established a fully-integrated, world-class production unit near Chennai, where it carries out all manufacturing and quality testing processes. Another manufacturing unit was set up in February 2008 with annual installed capacity of 3,30,000 vehicles in order to fulfil the increasing demand for Hyundai cars. The manufacturer has also set up a multi-million dollar research and development unit as part of its efforts to provide the best automobile technologies to its customers. The company is working towards making this unit the epitome of automobile engineering research. It has also set up a network of 340 dealers and 781 service points in order to become accessible to consumers located in all parts of the country and continue on its growth path.
