Hyundai Motors India Limited has plans to phase out its premium hatchback model Getz from the Indian domestic market. The company intends to position Hyundai i20 as its new generation premium small car model powered by the new K-series engine delivering better fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emission.

Hyundai Getz was launched in 2004 at a price tag of Rs. 4.5 lakh aimed at customers looking for more features and a better hatchback than Maruti Alto or M800. However, the model made a reverse dive in the Indian auto market within one year owing to the launch of Maruti Swift in 2005 with a similar price tag. Maruti Swift has record of one of the best success stories in the Indian car market ever since then making it one of the highest selling models in the country.

At the time of launch, Hyundai sold as many as 3000 units per month but sales have gradually dropped where the company sold only 6500 units in 2009 and only 1600 units in past six months this year. Thus, Hyundai has also not upgraded Getz according to the new emission norms. Now Hyundai plans to introduce new variants of i20 which has the new generation engine that complies with the new age emission norms and delivers better fuel efficiency.
