Korean carmaker Hyundai has reportedly announced a recall for more than 2,00,000 units of Elantra sedan over power steering defect that may cause crash. The affected sedans have been produced between 2008 to 2010, whereas the affected list also features the Elantra Touring hatchbacks that have been produced between 2009 to 2010. A control unit component that manages the power steering system in this case senses an error and disables the assistance. A report filed by Hyundai in this regard, states, “Steering control can be maintained; however, the vehicle will revert to a manual steering mode, requiring greater driver effort, particularly at low speeds. This could result in an increased risk of a crash.”

The loss of power steering assist is not considered to be a serious safety defect in the United States especially when manual steering is maintained. Speaking more on the occasion, Hyundai said, “More recently, however, the industry has increasingly handled similar issues through safety recalls due to the greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds. To remain consistent with that industry trend, Hyundai has decided to conduct this campaign as a safety recall.”
