The Hooghly administration has virtually taken over the Tata Nano factory on Thursday as the newly formed Mamta Banerjee government is set to return previously acquired land to the farmers in Singur.

Following the Gazette notification of the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act, 2011, the government had promptly completed all the formalities to acquire the land from Tata Motors. On the other hand, Tata Motors has challenged the legality of the newly formed act in the High Court.

On Thursday, nearly 600 policemen took over the control of the Nano Factory. About 40 staff members of the BDO and DLO (district land acquisition offices) in Singur and Chinsurah walked inside after the police vacated the factory complex. From now onwards, both officials and policeman will remain inside the factory.

In a statement given recently, the industries minister Partha Chatterjee said, "The process (of returning land) is under way. Let us wait and see what happens."

It is to be mentioned here that Tata Motors had to relocate its Nano manufacturing facility to Sanand (in Gujarat) from Singur, following a series of agitations by farmers led by that time’s opposition leader Mamta Banerjee.
