The Japan based leading car maker Honda has said that its second manufacturing facility at Tapukara in Rajasthan, will go on stream within next two-three years. The Tapukara unit was put on hold by the Japanese auto giant during the economic slowdown of year 2008, though the unit was opened partially.

Speaking to the reporters on Monday, Honda Siel Cars India Director (Marketing) Seki Inaba said, "Our first aim is to fully utilise the capacity of the Greater Noida facility and only after that we will consider starting assembly at Tapukara. I think we will be able to do that in the next 2-3 years."

Honda currently has a joint venture with the Siel Group in India. The firm has established its first manufacturing unit at Greater Noida in year 1997, with an investment of Rs 450 crore. The Greater Noida facility of the company has a total manufacturing capacity of 1 lakh units per annum that is scalable to 1.2 lakh units.

Earlier, the firm had planned-up a heavy investment of Rs 1,000 crore for setting-up a manufacturing unit at Tapukara, in Rajasthan, with an installed capacity of 60,000 units per annum. But the facility could not be utilized due to a sudden slowdown in demand in year 2008. The company has further planned-up an investment of Rs 250 crore for the Tapukara facility so that the power train unit can be expanded. The expansion will be made to cater to its upcoming compact hatchback Brio.
