Since the lack of diesel powered cars has been witnessed as the major reason for sales slowdown in the Indian car market, Honda Cars India Ltd. has took the centre stage in revealing the details of its plans to launch a diesel version.

The Indian subsidiary of the Japanese auto manufacturer has finally confirmed that diesel model will be introduced in India but will not be introduced firstly with its bestselling Honda Brio hatchback. Earlier, it was reported that Brio diesel variant will be rolled out during the festive season in the country.

Mr. Jnaneshwar Sen, Senior Vice-President – Sales & Marketing, Honda Cars India Ltd., was quoted as saying, "Honda is working on a diesel car, but it will not be a Brio diesel which will be offered first.... Honda is all about engines. Our engines create new benchmarks in the auto industry and that will be the case with Honda's diesel engine. Just like every other Honda engine, we want to be sure with this one as well. It will be the most powerful and efficient in its segment."

While refusing to comment on which of the Honda badged car will be the first one to be offered in diesel version, speculations are being fuelled that it would be the hot selling City sedan to own a diesel powertrain.

The car maker is expected to roll our first diesel model by 2014 and in a bid to control the cost of production; the diesel run model will be produced with increased level of localisation.
