Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Private Limited (HMSI), completely owned Indian subsidiary of Honda Motor Company (Japan), has decided to increase its production to meet the increasing demands. For this purpose, the company started the second phase of production at its Tapukara plant in Rajasthan. The Tapukara facility is the second plant of HMSI established in 2010.

In 2011, the annual production capacity of Tapukara plant was 0.6 million units. According to reports, Honda decided to put in a total investment of over Rs. 1000 crores for the second phase of production. With this investment, Honda increased the capacity of Tapukara facility to 1.2 million units. As per recent reports, the Tapukara plant will manufacture scooters as well as motorcycles. Activa (110 cc), CB Shine (125 cc) and CB Twister (110 cc) are some of the two-wheelers that will be manufactured at this plant. To cope with the increasing demand, Honda has established its third facility in Bangalore that will become operational by 2013. According to company sources, the Bangalore facility will have the annual production capacity of 1.2 million units. With its three facilities (Manesar, Tapukara and Bangalore), HMSI would be able to produce 4 million units in a year.

N.K. Rattan, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd, stated, “To meet the growing demand of customers, the second phase with 0.6 million units capacity has started today, taking the total capacity to 1.2 million units. With this, we shall be able to service our customers of Activa and CB Shine in a more speedy manner.”

HMSI has always believed in working without harming the environment and that is why green technology will be implemented during the production process at the Tapukara facility. Moreover, rain water utilisation and waste water recycling are some of the other eco-friendly processes that will be adopted by Honda.

In order to enhance the efficiency of the plant, Honda will introduce advanced automation and production technologies (developed at Manesar plant) at Tapukara facility. At present, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd is the third largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the country. With these expansion plans, HMSI would look forward to dethrone Bajaj Auto from the top spot.
