      Honda outpaces TVS and becomes third largest two-wheeler maker

      Honda Motor Company, the well established Japanese auto maker, has now become the third largest two-wheeler maker in the Indian auto industry by outpacing TVS Motor Company based in Chennai. The total sales of Honda stood at Rs. 1.34 crores units in the fiscal 2012.

      Under review of the latest figures stated by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturer (SIAM), Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), the completely owned subsidiary of Honda Motor Company, reported that its overall two-wheeler sales stood at 19,96,320 units for FY 2012.

      SIAM further said that Honda’s rival, TVS Motor reported the sales for two-wheelers at 18, 95,500 units during fiscal year 2012. In fiscal 2011, TVS was known as the third largest two-wheeler maker in India, whose sales stood at 17,64,956 units, whereas HMSI accounted for 15,51,378 units in the same period.

      The top position is still grabbed by Hero MotoCorp, while the second rank is titled to Bajaj Auto. During the last fiscal, Hero MotoCorp reported sales of 60,69,280 units, whereas its Pune based rival Bajaj Auto accounted the sales of 2,566,757 units.

      As per the statements released by SIAM, the Indian two-wheeler sector marked a growth of 14.16 per cent, amounting to 1,34,35,769 units in the fiscal 2012, as compared to 1,17,68,910 units of the last fiscal. During fiscal 2012, HMSI registered growth in both scooter as well as motorcycle segment by reporting growth of 37.08 per cent and 17.28 per cent respectively. The scooter sales amounted at 12,24,599 units, whereas the motorcycles sales stood at 7,71,721 units.

      On the other hand, the sales in scooter segment of TVS Motor expanded by 14.13 per cent resulting in 4,96,896 units. However, motorcycle segment of the company faced a downfall of 1.65 per cent, amounting at 6,21,738 units. In fiscal 2012, the sales of TVS Motor’s moped rose by 11.39 per cent at 7,76,866 units.
