It seems that Honda Cars India, the completely owned subsidiary of Honda Motor Company, is in a mood to make some favourable changes in its Brio hatchback and introduce some new avatars of the same. Reportedly, the company has been working on a sedan version of its Brio, which is expected to hit the Indian market in first half of 2013. Speculations state that the sedan model will feature a diesel engine, which will be the first of its kind in the Indian portfolio of the car maker.

The launch of an automatic version Brio is also on the cards of Honda Cars, which can be launched any time soon. Industry experts believe that the automatic model will be priced a little higher than the existing model, by around Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 70,000.

Sedan guise of Brio will measure sub-4 metres and is expected to square off against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire, Tata Indigo CS and the yet-to-be introduced Verito compact sedan. Auto analysts speculate that the new diesel engine has shared its credentials from the 1.6 litre powertrain, which was featured in Civic model that was introduced in Europe earlier this year.

In its engine manufacturing process, the company is expected to source several components from India itself, which will increase the localisation content and thus, make the upcoming model more economical. A large number of rumours are revolving around the engine of upcoming sedan and therefore, commenting on its power and torque figures could not be said with certainty. However, industry experts believe that the power output of the upcoming Brio sedan will stand somewhere between 65 and 115 bhp with a maximum torque of around 165 Nm to 220 Nm.

With the launch of a new entry-level diesel sedan in the Indian auto industry, Honda seems to be quite aggressive for the market as Indian buyers have developed a penchant for diesel run vehicles, owing to increasing difference between the prices of petrol and diesel.
