March has been one of the best months for the Indian automobile industry – second only to October 2015. The sales have grown substantially despite the price hike after the Union Budget 2016-17. Here are our highlights of hits and misses from the previous month.

The Renault Kwid monthly sales have almost reached 10,000 – 9,743 to be specific. The numbers themselves don’t surprise as there is demand for the hatchback. It just elaborates the fact that Renault has increased the production of the entry-level hatchback and the waiting period, which is currently around four months, should come down.

The pseudo-SUV from Mahindra is the other positive highlight of the month. The KUV100 with monocoque chassis and more similarities with normal hatchbacks than with most of the Mahindra vehicles is doing decently well. The company sold over 5,000 units in March – more than sales in January and February.

Among the cars that haven’t done well – the Tata Nano stands out with a drop in sales of almost 50 per cent. Only 732 units of the Nano were sold last month; almost half of sales in February. It is despite the fact that the car comes with an AMT transmission, offers decent features and carries a competitive price tag.

The Innova is the other model that hasn’t done well in March. It doesn’t come as a surprise though, Toyota has stopped the production and the current model will be replaced by the Innova Crysta in the first week of May. The numbers for March - 2,805 units - are part of the final dispatches to the dealers and the car will be discontinued soon.
