Over 50 cars piled-up after colliding with each other in Gronau, near Muenster, on the Germany-Netherlands border, due to heavy fog and low visibility. As per the media reports, the visibility on the highway dipped to almost zero after heavy fog settled in the area. The car drivers did not get a chance to react and smashed into the cars one after another, making a massive pile-up of 52 cars. The incident has claimed the life of 3 persons, while over 35 people got injured.

This is the consecutive second such incident in this month as a similar incident took place earlier this month on M5 London highway, killing 7 and leaving over 51 injured. Besides heavy fog, that incident was also blamed to the heavy fireworks celebration in the nearby town. However, in the case of Gronau mishap, initial report has suggested the heavy fog was the only reason of this huge pile-up.

Each year, heavy fog and low visibility on highways claim hundreds of lives in the world. Scientists across the world are working on developing technologies that can help in preventing such mishaps or at least can decline the rate of impact in such incidents. Scientists have developed a new car application through which instant messages can be sent to other cars coming to that direction in case of sudden crash of cars into each other due to heavy fog. The app can prove very helpful in decreasing the number of casualties in such incidents.
