Delhi has been known for its traffic vows and alarming pollution levels. The much talked about car-free Tuesday initiative finally kicks-off today in Gurgaon. Though there is no complete ban on using vehicles the administration has been promoting use of cycle rickshaws, metro, shared cabs, autos and car pooling instead of using private vehicles.

To ensure successful implementation, many different agencies have reportedly taken up roles to promote this initiative. On Tuesdays, on-street parking would not be available in order to encourage use of non-motorised and public transport facility. However, people can park their cars at Leisure Valley ground from where they avail shuttle services ferrying to different routes. Wrongly parked vehicles around the city lifted by Police can be collected from here.

Speaking more on the occasion, Bharti Arora, joint commissioner of police (traffic), Gurgaon said to HT, “Shuttl, an app-based service, will be available from Leisure Valley ground to all four stretches on Tuesdays. However, anybody wrongly parking cars on roads will be challaned and their cars will be towed away. People should also be prepared for a surprise zero-tolerance day by the traffic police this week.” Around five cranes each, among a total of 20 cranes would be stationed on four roads to tow away wrongly parked vehicles.

Though car-free Tuesday would be followed by the entire city, four major IT corridors have been concentrated upon for this campaign - Unitech Cyber Park area (Netaji Subhash Road), Electronic City (Udyog Vihar), DLF Cyber City and Golf Course Road. To support this initiative, Navdeep Singh Virk, Police Commissioner was spotted riding a bicycle on a virtually empty stretch which once witnessed long traffic jams. Speaking to NDTV, Virk said, “We are motivating people to car pool or cycle to work. We have ensured 400 extra private buses, more rapid metro trips...We want to see if we can cut down on our car usage.”
