Breaking of traffic rules is a big problem that currently confronts several parts of India, including and especially large cities where the number of vehicles is high. The government, over the years, has gone on to take several steps to control the menace but the problem persists at a large level. Now, according to sources, the government has decided to take an unusual but effective way of teaching offenders a lesson. Along with a possibility of getting their driver’s license suspended and a heavy fine, the offenders’ names will be published in local newspapers with photographs. The jurisdiction of this entire premise will lie with the traffic cops, who can charge the offender with any of the punishments.

As per government sources, the embarrassment method could lead to effective reduction in number of offenders. People, irrespective of how careless they are, would always want to avert any sort of public defamation in any form. Avoidance of social embarrassment, therefore, seems to be the new tool being adopted by the government to make citizens more responsible and follow traffic rules.

This clause is expected to be introduced in the new draft of the Road Transport and Safety Bill in the near future. Not only is the government in favour of this move, it believes that the method has a lot of substance and potential to make an impact. Interestingly, another condition that will make things worse for offenders is that they will have to bear the cost of the newspaper advertisement publishing their names and photographs.
