The US based leading auto maker General Motors is gearing-up to launch a new small car in the Indian market in association with its Chinese partner Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC). The new GM small car will be positioned below the Chevrolet Spark and rival the highest selling Maruti Alto in the price segment of around Rs 2 lakh.

As per its expansion plans in the Indian market, GM India is considering a variety of options for the Indian market. The company plans to launch as many as six new car models in the country over the period of next two years that includes four passenger vehicles and two lightweight commercial vehicles.

Speaking to the TOI, GM’s international operations president Tim Lee said, “We are looking at every opportunity. While we are looking at every segment of the market, we understand that we do not have a product in the (Maruti) Alto range. The Alto is a credible product and we could be looking at that segment.”

In calendar year 2010, GM India sold a total of 110,804 units of its cars in the Indian market as compared to 69,579 units sold in year 2009. At present, the company accounts for a moderate 4.6 percent share of the total vehicle sales in the Indian market.
