      GM joins hands with LG to develop electric cars

      In a first of its kind alliance in the world automobile industry, the US auto giant General Motors and leading Korea based firm LG Corp have joined hands to develop electric cars. It is to be mentioned here that LG is already supplying lithium-ion batteries to GM for its Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera plug-in hybrid models. The news of GM –LG collaboration came just a few days after Toyota joined hands with Ford Motors to developed Hybrid SUVs and Trucks.
       
      In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, the two companies stated that they would be designing a series of electric cars to launch in the global market. The agreement was signed by GM Chief Executive Daniel Akerson and LG President Juno Cho. The engineers of both of the firms have already started work in tandem at the US facility of GM.
       
      LG's Cho said in a recent statement, "This is a strategic development for LG and we fully support GM's goal to lead the industry in the electrification of the automobile".
       
      GM has recently stated that it is in the process of developing a plug-in hybrid version of its popular luxury brand Cadillac. The firm is also developing a fully-electric global small car that is expected to hit the markets in next few years.
       
      Both firms had collaborated in year 2010 for the manufacturing of Chevy Cruze electric cars for the G20 economic summit in Seoul.
