GM's Talegaon engine facility is its first powertrain plant in the world where petrol as well as diesel engines are manufactured simultaneously. The facility has been built with an investment of US $230 million and became operational in November 2010. While the facility has the initial production capacity of 160,000 engines per year, it has been so designed that there is a possibility of expansion in the future. Within a time period of just more than 2 years, the plant has touched the 100,000 engine milestone without hampering the quality and efficiency of the engines.

Lowell Paddock, President & Managing Director, General Motors India, talking about the performance said, “This is a proud moment for us all of us at GM India. Crossing the milestone of producing 100,000 engines at the powertrain plant is a testament of our commitment to the Indian market. With the launch of the Chevrolet SAIL U-VA and the forthcoming launches of Chevrolet SAIL and Chevrolet Enjoy, we will be stepping up the production at the plant. We look forward to achieving more milestones as we go ahead and offer best-in-segment cars in the Indian automobile market.”

The powertrain facility presently produces TCDi diesel engines in 1.0 litre and 1.3 litre capacities along with petrol engines in 1.0 litre and 1.2 litre capacities. Keeping in View the growing demand for its various models and new cars like Sail notchback and Enjoy MPV due next year, the Powertrain engine plant has been so designed that its capacity, depending on the requirement, can further be increased by another 140,000 engines annually in the second phase.

General Motors India's Talegaon manufacturing plant, has just a few days back been recognised by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for Energy Reduction Progress. The plant is among GM's 54 facilities located worldwide that meets voluntary energy-reduction challenge set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Talegaon manufacturing facility managed to cut energy intensity by 12 per cent in less than two years, which prevented 4,419 tons of CO2 from being discharged into the atmosphere.
