      GM India mulls to produce a mini electric car from Talegaon plant

      The Indian unit of US based leading car maker General Motors, said on Thursday that it is eying to produce an electric car at its Talegaon facility in Maharashtra. The car will be displayed in the Indian market next month.

      In a statement given to PTI, General Motors India President and MD Karl Slym said, "We will be showcasing an electric mini-car in June. This car has been developed in the US and is meant for a global audience." He added that GM India played a big role in developing the technology for the car at its R&D centre at Bangalore.

      While further informing about the car, Mr. Slym said, "It will depend on feedback from our customers here when we will unveil it... If we decide to produce and launch it in India, we can use the Talegaon facility for that purpose."

      Meanwhile, the company is also gearing-up to roll-out a diesel version of its compact hatchback  Chevrolet Beat. The launch of a new variant will enable the Beat series to compete more promptly with the likes of Ford Figo, Volkswagen Polo, Maruti Wagon R, Swift and Ritz. The new Beat diesel is expected to be launched in the segment of sub Rs 5 lakh.
