Opel fans attending the 2016 Geneva Motor Show were glad to witness the eTouring Car Racing concept, the Opel Astra TCR along with the eleventh edition of generation of Opel Astra. The race model is only being offered to a selected number of customers who can use it for long as well as short distance runs.

The Opel Astra is believed to be based on the company’s new design philosophy. The customer gets an opportunity to choose between five-door hatchback and a Sports Tourer. The vehicle is offered in engine ranging between 1.0-litre and 1.6-litre engine options in petrol and diesel engine options that would generate a power output ranging between 89bhp to 198bhp of power. The entry level model is offered with a 1.4-litre engine option.

The Opel Astra comes loaded with IntelliLux LED matrix light technology that adapts to distribution and length of light beam as per traffic situations. Along with the LED, the vehicle comes loaded with features like Integrated Brake Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Forward Collision Alert, Advanced Park Assist, Side Blind Spot Alert and Traffic sign Assist.

The Opel Astra TCR is offered with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that is mated to six-speed racing transmission with paddle shifts that generates about 226bhp of power and 420Nm of torque. The vehicle weighs a mere 1200kgs that ensures easy maneuverability. For complete control, the vehicle comes with 378 mm brake discs and 6-piston brake calipers while the rear comes with 265 mm brake discs and 2-piston brake calipers.

It has been a while since Opel cars have plied on the Indian roads and it is unlikely that we will see any of them in near future. The Astra sedan in its days did well in India – not that we are looking at another hatchback or sedan in the crowded segment, but we certainly won’t mind getting our hands on the  226bhp hatchback version.
