The Indian unit of the US based leading automaker General Motors have revealed that the sales figures for the month ending April 2012 have declined by 20.34 percent contradicting the company’s anticipated sales volume for the corresponding month.

General Motors India has recorded sales volume of 8005 units in the last month in comparison to 10050 units sold in the corresponding month last year. The car maker has also disclosed that as the buyers were expecting rise in taxes of diesel powered cars coupled with greater excise duties with the release of the Union Budget for 2012-13, the sales saw a catapult in February and March.

Mr. P. Balendran, Vice-President, General Motors India, commented on the declined sales figures, saying, "The sales were not on the expected lines as uncertainty in fuel prices, hike in excise duty, and hike in local taxes in some states continue to put a lot of pressure on the automobile market."

The marginal sales volume comprised of 821 units of its small segment car Chevrolet Spark and 4586 units of its bestselling compact hatchback Chevrolet Beat. The premium and elegant sedan, Chevrolet Cruze commanded a sale of 455 units while entry-level sedan Aveo and mid-sized sedan Optra scored a sales volume of 140 units and 28 units respectively.

Mr. Balendran also mentioned in a statement that the company is driving towards quick revival owing to the reduction in the CRR and the repo rates that will accelerate liquidity in the market and will ensure money circulation in the economy.
