General Motors India, the Indian wing of the American auto giant, is endeavoring to revamp its existing Indian portfolio and the foundation of this growth strategy has been laid with the upcoming mega launch of the Chevrolet Sail hatchback and sedan and Chevrolet Enjoy MPV. Meanwhile, the company is also considering the launch of a new mini SUV, Chevrolet Trax and a highly competitive and economical car, Chevrolet Spark mini.

Mr. Kevin Wale, Chief Country Operations Officer, General Motors India, China and ASEAN, commented, "Both the segments (compact SUV and low-price car) are attractive... (and) pretty visible... Our job is to look at them and see if we have solution to fit those needs."

The SUV and the hatchback segment have emerged to be the ye-candy of the Indian buyers and many automakers have developed models to cement their stance in these segments.

With the launch of Chevrolet Sail range, the car maker plans to roll off the least demanded vehicles, UV-A, Aveo and Optra from the Indian auto market.

Mr. Wale has however, not confirmed the company’s foray into these newly emerged high demanded segments saying that an elaborate market opportunity study will be made to initiate the project in a structured manner.

Along with Chevrolet Trax, the company is also considering to introduce a new model to be positioned below its entry level model, Chevrolet Spark. The car will be intended to compete head-on against Maruti Alto and Hyundai Eon, the current segment leaders. The company is planning to fabricate it with a small 1.0L diesel engine, giving it an edge over its rivals.
