General Motors India Private Limited (GMIPL), the country's fifth largest automobile manufacturing company, is looking towards retailing close to 4,000 units of its premium Chevrolet Sail U VA hatchback every month in the domestic market. GMIPL introduced Sail U-VA in Kerala on November 16, 2012 and the American auto major is expectant of selling some 250 units of its new hatch every month in the southern most Indian state. Evidently, the new Chevrolet Sail U-VA is an extremely important product for the company's Indian portfolio and competes against likes of segment leaders like Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai i20 in the hatchback segment. The competition in premium hatch segment is most fierce and several great products are in the competition as well, such as Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Etios Liva, Ford Figo, Maruti Suzuki Ritz, Fiat Grande Punto, Honda Brio and Skoda Fabia.

Commenting on the already cut throat competition and prospects of Chevrolet Sail U-VA in domestic market, Lowell Paddock, President and Managing Director (MD), General Motors India, said, “The car brings a new sense of vitality to the largest, fastest growing and competitive segment in the domestic passenger car market. We expect India to take its place among world's largest market.” Regarding the recent sluggish sales in Indian market, Paddock accepted that highs and lows were common.

Expressing his views on the problems faced by company in the Indian auto market P. Balendran, Vice President (VP), GMIPL acknowledged prime reasons to be high inflation and ever increasing motor vehicle finance rates amongst others. Balendran further added, “We are expecting market will improve in coming months.”

Reportedly, the American auto major registered sales of 1,11,510 units, comprising its entire product portfolio in Indian passenger car market during 2011. On being enquired about the GMIPL's sales projection for ongoing year, Balendran said, “We will not be able to meet this target as three models had been phased out. But still we will be able to maintain growth in tandem with industrial growth.”
