      General Motors India blames lack of infrastructure for not launching electric cars

      The Indian subsidiary of the US based leading car maker General Motors has blamed a lack of infrastructure for not rolling-out an electric car in the Indian market.

      Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Coimbatore, P Balendran, Vice-President, GM India, said, "We have proved, by displaying the electric car in Delhi, that we have the technology. But where is the infrastructure, particularly power?"

      Mr. Balendran said that while country has shortage of power for even domestic use, it would be difficult get additional power for recharging a car battery. Power shortage could be a problem in commercially launching an electric car in the Indian market, he said.

      The company had recently showcased the electric version of its Beat model in the National capital. However, its launch in the country is not expected to take place in near future.

      The company is planning to launch five new cars in the Indian market in coming 18 months, as a part of its portfolio expansion strategy in the Indian market.

      While the overall sales of auto industry dipped by 15 percent in the month of July 2011, GM India registered a growth of 34 per cent in the same month. The company is aiming to sell 1.4 lakh cars in the current financial year as compared to 1.1 lakh cars sold in the previous fiscal.

      GM India has recently launched the diesel version of its popular compact hatchback Beat in the Indian market in the price segment of Rs 4.29 lakh to 5.45 lakh.
