The designation of Managing Director in Tata Motors, which was vacant ever since P.M. Telang retired in June 2012, will now be occupied by Karl Slym. Slym will be spearheading all the existing operations of the car maker in India as well as in the global arena, including South Korea, Thailand, Spain, Indonesia and South Africa. However, Tata Motor’s complete owned brand, Jaguar Land Rover will continue to be managed separately under the guidance of Chief Executive Officer, Ralf Speth.

Slym has been serving as the Executive Vice-President and Board Member of China based Joint Venture (JV) of General Motors, SGMW Motors. In past, Slym was serving as the President, Managing Director and Board Member for the Indian subsidiary of American automotive giant, General Motors. Throughout his tenure of 17 years with GM, he served on different positions across several locations and will now take the charge of Tata Motors' operations with effect from October 1, 2012. Back in 2007, GM realised the potential that lies with Slym and appointed him as the Head of its Indian subsidiary.

Since 2006, Slym has been endowed with double responsibilities of Vice-president, Asia Pacific, GM and Vice-President, Quality, GM Daewoo Automotive and Technology in South Korea. He has also served Toyota UK in Britain back in 1997 before resuming his tenure with General Motor. Slym has done his qualifications from Stanford University, California, which is counted among the leading research and teaching institutions in the world.
