According to the recent list released by a US insurance company, Ford, Subaru and Volkswagen have been listed as the safest new passenger cars. The survey was conducted by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety where at least 19 passenger and 8 SUV models for 2010 were assessed against the standard safety features. These awards are closely watched by the car buyers as well as car sellers to attract customers to their showrooms.

This year the Institute had reduced the number of awards due to stricter requirements for roof strength. The vehicles are selected for best protecting motorists in front, side and rear crash tests based on Institute evaluations during the year. The vehicles are required to have electronic stability control, or ESC, to qualify for the award.

The highest awards were bagged by Ford and its Volvo unit which bagged 6 awards followed by five awards each by Japanese Subaru and German car maker Volkswagen group including its Audi unit. Toyota Motor Corp., BMW AG, Mazda Motor Corp. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. were shut out in the annual IIHS review. Subaru stands out as the only manufacturer to get a top rating for all tests.
