Ford India launched its small car hatchback model in India last month with an attractive price tag. The car has been well-received by the Indian customers and Ford has already reported three-fold jump in its sales. The company will start a second shift from June 2010 to meet the rising demand of its small car model. Ford has its manufacturing unit in Chennai which currently has annual manufacturing capacity of 100,000 units. Ford has planned $500 million investments for its production plant in Chennai and will increase its manufacturing capacity to 200,000 units soon looking at demand for Figo.

Ford reported sale of 7509 units in April 2010 as compared to 2034 units in the same month last year. It has already received 15000 bookings for Figo in last seven weeks. Figo continues to maintain the sales momentum for the company.

"We are happy to see the Figo sustain its momentum and create a new set of customers for us...(we) are proactively preparing to meet up with the demand as we begin our second production shift starting June," Ford India President and Managing Director Michael Boneham said.
