With the plans to strengthen their position in the incessantly growing hatchback segment, Ford India launched its much awaited car, Ford Figo. To give a stiff competition to Figo, Japanese auto major, Nissan launched its premium hatchback model Nissan Micra in the Indian automobile market. Popularly known as Nissan March or Nissan Verita in other countries, Micra is one of the  most popular cars from Nissan. Previously considered as a small company, Nissan India gained immense popularity in the Indian market after the launch of Nissan Micra.

On other hand, the American manufacturer Ford Motors manufactured Figo especially for Indian market after comprehending the requirements and mindset of Indian buyers. Available in both petrol and diesel models with four variants each, Ford Figo is a compact car with advanced array of features, including speed sensing volume control and intelligent central locking. The petrol variants of Ford Figo is powered by 1.2L, 1196cc, SEFI engine, which churns out power of 71 PS at 6250 rpm and torque of 102 Nm at 4,000 rpm.

Ford Figo is a car with unique urban looks with features like vertical stacked taillight cluster, human-eye shaped headlights and reverse light.

Leading the sales figures of Nissan India with 1784 units being sold in January 2011, Nissan Micra was declared a hit in Indian market. Popularly known as a bubble car, Nissan Micra is available in both petrol and diesel variants. Petrol variants of Micra, known as  Nissan Micra XE, Nissan Micra XL and Nissan Micra XV, are powered by 1.2L, 1198cc, DOHC, 12 valve, 3 cylinder engine. On the other hand, its diesel version is introduced with 1.5 litre, SOHC, 8 valve, 4 cylinder common rail engine.

The petrol variant of Nissan Micra generates power of 76 PS at 6000 rpm and torque of 104 Nm at 4000 rpm. It delivers the mileage of around 14 kmpl in city and 18.06 kmpl on highways. On the other hand, the diesel engine is capable of generating power of 64 PS at 4000 rpm and torque of 160 Nm at 2000 rpm. Delivering 23.08 kmpl of mileage, Nissan Micra diesel is considered best in its segment. With sporty looks and fascinating interiors, Nissan Micra is a high definition car, which is loaded with active safety features like dual front airbags and Anti-lock Braking System with EBD, among others.

Both these cars have been giving stiff competition to the already existing small cars, including Maruti Swift and Hyundai i10. The ex-showroom price of Ford Figo ranges between Rs.3.7 lac and Rs.5.6 lac, whereas Nissan Micra costs around Rs.4.1 lac to Rs.6.2 lac. Hence, if pricing is considered as the parameter of judgment, Figo wins over  Micra. However, if features are taken into consideration, then Nissan Micra with powerful engine and better head space surpasses the Ford Figo. On the contrary, Figo wins over Micra in terms of pricing, good leg and boot space.
