As safety issues have been growing cause of concern across global carmakers, American carmaker Ford is the new one to be at the receiving end for air bag problems. Based on tests, around 8,50,000 units are believed to be affected by this system glitch that prevents the air bags from deploying in the event of a crash. The problem has been identified in the control module, which is responsible to collect information from front crash sensors and other sensors which then use the information for activating air bags and seat-belt pretensioners.

Until now, no major incident of injury or fatality has been reported. It is believed that the models that are recalled may possibly be affected with short circuit problems that prevent safety features from functioning normally. Among the list of vehicles called for recall some are - Ford C-MAX, Fusion, Escape and Lincoln MKZ vehicles. The affected vehicles are mostly from the year 2013 – 14. Speaking more on the recall issue, a Ford Motor spokesperson stated that recalls from major carmakers are common these days as cars have evolved over time and loaded with technologically advanced features that make them vulnerable to technical glitches. In the past General Motors had been badly affected by issues pertaining to ignition switch which used to shut down the air bag system even when the vehicle was in motion. The company has recalled about 2.6 million cars and has noted about 21 fatalities due to the problem.
