The automobile world is common with eight-speed automatic gearbox systems, sometimes we come across nine-speed gearbox patterns. Research work is going on with ten-speed gearbox systems, now Ford has filed for an application for an 11-speed automatic transmission. It has lent an air of inevitability for the automobile world.
Ford has developed a 10-speed automatic in cohesion with General Motors; however the 11-speed seems to be a Ford effort only. The design has indicated the utilisation of planetary gearsets, which have not been used with dual-clutch systems. It is likely to be quite a conventional, torque-converter automatic system. It is not yet known, which model will be chosen for the debut of this gearbox. It might also not be launched at all, as it is not uncommon for automakers to patent gearing arrangements without actually launching them.
It is an astonishing fact that how the manufacturers are racing to add more gears to their automatic transmissions. It actually helps the engine to be more efficient with a greater ratio spread. Many manufacturers have turned to CVTs and prefer a ratio count just shy of infinity.
