The 1921 Alpha Romeo G1, the first ever Alpha Romeo to be built, will be auctioned in January 2018. The classic holds a lot of historical significance as only 52 units of the G1 were ever made and this is the only one to have survived to this day. Moreover, the vehicle comes from an era when Alfa Romeo racing team was one of the most dominating forces of motorsport. Reports indicate that at the time of its auction, the Alpha Romeo might fetch anything over $1.5 million (Rs 97.62 crores).
Under the hood, the 1921 Alfa Romeo G1 was powered by a 6.3-litre straight six engine which generated an impressive 70bhp of power, compared to other cars which produced much lower power figures. The vehicle was quite fast on the race tracks in its prime time considering the fact that it could attain a top speed of 130kmph.
Reports indicate that the 1921 Alfa Romeo G1 with the chassis 6018, has spent most of its life in Australia. The vehicle was left unused for a while before it was discovered in 1940s. It was only in 1965 that Alfa Romeo collector, Ross Flewell-Smith decided to buy it and restored it in the 1970s to its original form. The vehicle was brought out in the early 2000 and has earned a series of awards at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concourse.
