Sources have indicated that Fiat has been planning on launching Abarth-tuned crossover version of 500X crossover sometime by 2017. Apart from this, the company has also been planning on offering Abarth version of 124 Spider. Though the company has not openly spoken on the plans for 500X, but has expressed company’s desire to look beyond its current 500-based models.
The current model of 500X and 124 Spider share the same 1.4-litre MultiAir II petrol engine that generates about 134bhp of power, to this the company plans on offering the Abarth 124 Spider with 170bhp of power. The 500X on the other hand is likely to get four-wheel drive system along with choice of dual-clutch automatic or six-speed manual gearboxes. Post launch it could emerge as a strong rival against Nissan Juke Nismo RS and Mini Countryman John Cooper Works edition.
