Popular sports carmaker Ferrari has added a new feather to its cap. The 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 engine which powers the 488 GTB has won the 2016 International Engine of the Year award. This indeed makes it the first engine with over six-cylinders to claim the top spot in a decade. Additionally, the 3.9-litre V8 engine also won top honours in the ‘New Engine’, ‘Performance Engine’ and the ‘3.0 to 4.0-litre’ categories.
Speaking about it, Dean Slavnich, co-chairman of the International Engine of the Year Awards said, “It was the powertrain’s sophisticated design – loaded with advanced technologies – that saw off a serious challenge from last year’s winner, BMW’s i8 PHEV creation, as well as Porsche’s new straight-six turbo in the 911, to take top honours.”
Back in 2006, BMW’s 5.0-litre V10 had won the award, but since then many have opted for downsizing their engines. However, the German automaker BMW still has a reason to cheer, as its 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid motor is pronounced as the best engine in the '1.4 to 1.8-litre' category class. The Mercedes-AMG 2.0-litre turbo engine which serves the A45 AMG, CLA 45 AMG and the GLA45 AMG has for the second consecutive time won the award in the '1.8 to 2.0-litre' category.
The 'Green Engine' trophy has been won by Tesla’s full-electric engine which powers the Model S and Model X. The jury panel of the International Engine of the Year Awards comprised of 63 motoring journalists from 31 countries.
