Tata has launched the Tigor JTP in India at Rs 7.49 lakhs (ex-showroom). It’s a hot compact sedan and is a sibling to Tiago JTP. First showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo, the Tigor JTP, takes the essence of the stock Tigor but has been tuned by Coimbatore based automotive tuners Jayem Auto under a JV called JSTV. The external appearance as compared to the stock car is changed thanks to the sporty bumpers, large 15-inch alloys, air scoops on the bonnet and of course those red coloured JTP badges at the front and rear. Inside, it’s the stock top-of-the-line Tigor but with red accents on the air con vents and the floor mats. In addition you also get aluminium pedals and two-tone seats with JTP stitching in the backrests. Putting the P in the JTP (Jayem Tata performance) is a 1.2-litre turbo petrol motor with 112bhp/138Nm. This engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
The Tigor JTP is a niche vehicle in the essence that its top of the line stock model is almost xx Rs lower priced than the equivalent JTP model. This puts the Tigor JTP in contention with the likes of the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI and the Maruti Baleno RS both premium hatchbacks with sporty intentions. Going with this theme you could also look at mid-level versions of the Hyundai Elite i20 and Honda Jazz.
At this price you can also mid-level versions of all the compact SUVs like the Honda WR-V, Ford EcoSport as well as Tata’s own Nexon. We would also like to believe that the arrival of the Tigor JTP and the Tiago JTP are India’s Volkswagen Golf GTI moment- Affordable performance but with everyday use and losing none of the practicality offered by the stock brethren.
