      Ever ambitious Maruti aiming to project 1.2 mn cars in 2011

      Indian auto giant Maruti Suzuki is expecting to manufacture as many as 1.2 million vehicles in the ongoing financial year, a top official of the company said on Tuesday.

      Speaking to the reporters at a press conference in Mumbai, Maruti Suzuki Managing Executive I V Rao said, "We are looking at producing 1.2 million vehicles in FY'11, as compared to 1 million vehicles produced in FY'10.” Further, briefing reporters on company’s current production figures, Mr. Rao said, “Following the productivity improvement, we are now manufacturing 1 lakh vehicles per month for the last five months.”

      In the next financial year, total manufacturing capacity of the Maruti will increase further as its second plant at Manesar is slated to go on stream in that fiscal.

      Moreover, Maruti Suzuki India is establishing a test track in the Indian market with an estimated investment of Rs 1,000 cr. "We are setting up a full-fledged test track at Rohtak, in Haryana, for which we have bought land. We are working on various facilities and infrastructure and the track will be ready in three years' time," said Mr. Rao.

      In April-December 2010 period, the company sold a total of 585,523 units of its cars in India as against 459,507 cars sold in the same period last year.
