Maruti Suzuki, meanwhile, is expected to launch the Ignis early next year. When launched, it will be positioned below the Vitara Brezza as their new compact crossover. The Euro-spec Ignis is one of the lightest and the most compact vehicles in its class. It’s just 3.7m long and weighs 810kg, thanks to a new platform that targets lightness and rigidity.

Design wise, the Ignis marks its arrival with a distinctive front face that integrates the LED headlamps and the strong lines of the front grille. It also inherits the first-generation Cervo’s (SC100 Whizzkid ) slit-like ‘C’ pillar design cues and also the Swift’s blacked out ‘A’ and ‘B’ pillar design.

Inside, standard equipment for all Ignis variants include six airbags, air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, 15-inch wheels, body coloured door mirrors and front electric windows. The top-spec variants, meanwhile, add navigation, rear view camera, 16-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, wheel arch extensions, keyless entry and individually sliding rear seats.

The Ignis is powered by the same 1.2-litre petrol motor that was first introduced in the Swift in 2014. The 90bhp engine features Suzuki’s SHVS mild hybrid system for select variants. Rather interestingly, the Ignis also gets an all-wheel drive system which sadly will be omitted in India. Prices for the Suzuki Ignis in the UK range between £9,999 (Rs 8.66 lakh) and £13,999 (Rs 12.13 lakh). The crossover is available in up to six variants with manual, AMT and AWD configurations.

Maruti Suzuki is expected to launch the Ignis with a competitive price range of Rs 4 to 6.5 lakh, thanks to a high level of localisation. The car will mainly compete with Mahindra’s KUV100
