Individuals who have been longing to drive down to Nepal are likely to hear some good news soon. The road transport ministry is reportedly trying to finalize a protocol that would allow the movement of personal vehicle between the two countries. Until now, passenger busses were allowed to ply between both the countries based on a bilateral motor vehicle pact that had been signed in 2014 between India and Nepal.

Speaking more on the occasion, a road ministry official said, “The protocol would be in place in the next couple of months. Initially, personal vehicles from India would be allowed to enter Nepal through two border crossing points at Sunauli in Gorakhpur and Raxaul in Bihar.” Adding more to it, another official said, “We are getting the software developed. Once it is ready, one can apply and get permit online. The prospective traveller would just have to show the permit at the border check post and continue to Nepal.”

To simplyfy the process, tourists may be allowed to apply and get permits online. The crossing points may be increased at a later date and sometime by next year, the service would likely further allow private vehicles from India to head to Thimpu and Dhaka. In June, sources stated that MV agreement has been signed to allow movement of passenger and public vehicles between Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal and India.
