The prices of petrol have been soaring in India for a long time now, thereby causing widespread agony among people. High international rates and poor condition of the Indian economy have contributed to rise in petrol rates. Hike in prices has badly affected manufacturers of petrol cars as they have experienced a decline in demand, which is quite understandable. This has directly caused the demand for diesel cars to rise in India. Vehicles powered by diesel are fuel efficient and are considered to be proficient for travelling long distances. In fact, some of the most successful cars of 2013 have done well because of their diesel variants. The biggest example of this is Amaze compact sedan, Honda's first diesel offering that has outclassed all its competitors. Now, according to sources, there are several upcoming cars that are expected to make a huge impact on the market in 2014. Experts, on their part, have tried to analyse the top diesel models that will enter the Indian market and could do really well.

If there is one company in the car market that everyone is talking about at the moment, it is Japanese automobile giant Honda. Not only has this firm recorded incredible sales figures, it has done so in difficult circumstances. Indian subsidiary of the Tokyo-based company recently released reports for November, wherein it registered a growth of 151 per cent in sales. A major reason for this is the introduction of the i-DTEC diesel engine, which is lightweight, efficient and powerful. After achieving great success with Amaze, Honda is going to launch City diesel in January 2014. The firm has already created a lot of hype around this model by unveiling it in November. Experts have predicted that this model is going to be a game changer, which will take the market by storm. Reportedly, the Japanese firm has put in a lot of effort to make the new model more appealing. Enhancements have been done in terms of exteriors, interiors and spaciousness. City diesel will be fitted with the same 1.5-litre i-DTEC engine that powers the Amaze. However, it is being said that this powertrain will be fine tuned in order to produce higher power levels.

It would be hard to recollect the name of a model that is more hyped than the Tata Nano. This compact hatchback, launched as the world's cheapest production car, has constantly made headlines, time and time again. However, irrespective of the hype, it has not been able to deliver in terms of sales and critical response. Tata Motors, the manufacturer, has also been enduring a tough period, wherein sales have dropped drastically. Now, the Indian auto maker, in 2014, will be introducing a diesel version of Nano, sources have claimed. Industry experts feel that Nano diesel could make a significant impact on the hatchback segment, given that some changes are made to enhance its solidity and safety features. Sources claim that diesel version of Tata Nano is going to be powered by a three-cylinder 800 cc engine. Although nothing has been confirmed by the Indian auto maker, the launch of Nano diesel looks likely.

Maruti Suzuki, according to sources, is set to make an entry in the compact Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment by launching the XA Alpha in 2014. This car was introduced as a concept model at 2012 Auto Expo, attracting a lot of attention from buyers and the media. This car, when launched, will compete with the likes of Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster. Sources suggest that it is going to come in both petrol and diesel versions. Industry experts feel that XA Alpha diesel, if priced aggressively, could give EcoSport a run for its money.
