The favourable past season of Volkswagen Polo R Cup has augmented its reputation of providing exciting action in the Indian racing circuit. This season, the excitement increases manifold with an international racer at the top of the tally in the current Championship Standings post the inaugural round.
Leading the other racers is Mexico-based Diego Duez who has swiftly moved to the top of the table with his running total adding up to 45 points after successful completion of two races of Round One of the JK Tyre Volkswagen Polo R Cup 2012. With this win, Diego has also become the first international driver to win a JK Tyre Volkswagen Polo R Cup.
Diego finished Race One at sixth place with 15 points. An addition of 30 points in Race Two fetched him the top spot in the current Championship Standings after the first round of the JK Tyre Volkswagen Polo R Cup 2012 held at the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore. The winner of Race One, Avdumber Hede, stands second with 42 points and Mihir Dharkar is a close third with 40 points. Splitting of the race into two parts has significantly increased competition among frontrunners.
Avdumber won the first race clocking 14:30.038. Mihir made it to the second spot with a time difference of 0.706 seconds. With a time gap of 2.500 seconds, A. Sandeep Kumar came third. Starting fifth on the grid, Diego finished sixth with a timing of 14:39.314. After 9 laps, the race was red-flagged and was subsequently split into two parts. Aggregate of timings of both parts of the race determined the winners.
Diego won Race Two crossing finish line with a timing of 19:17.543, way ahead of Alisha Abdullah at second place. She was the only female driver in the race. Debutant Prashanth Tharani stood third. It was an interesting finish with Alisha 6.747 seconds behind the winner but only 0.591 seconds ahead of Prashanth.
Diego was at the third grid at the start of the race and advanced to the peak of the table as the race progressed. Experienced racer Ameya Walavalkar started last and only managed to finish sixth in the second edition of the race, displaying a dismal overall performance.
