Maruti Suzuki, the country's leading passenger car maker, has set new benchmarks in recording the sales of its two iconic models, Swift and the DZire. Earlier it was said that the DZire was introduced as an offshoot to the Swift model; however the sales of former outpaced the latter during April 2013 for the first time and emerged as India's second bestseller following Maruti Alto. During the month, DZire accounted for 19,446 units and lost out by just 400 units to even overtook the sales of Alto, which has been the country's bestselling model for a decade now. Interestingly, April 2013 was earlier said to be a tough month for the DZire as it was provided with a tough competition by the newly launched Honda Amaze at that time.

With these overwhelming sales figures, the company officials are of a view that DZire will achieve even greater milestones in the future as the demand for compact sedans has been significantly increasing in the country. The Chief Operating Officer (Marketing and Sales) at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, Mayank Pareek was quoted as saying, “When we conceived DZire, few years back it was thought as a complete package of a sedan coming at the price of a hatchback. It's a strong package as a sedan that runs high on efficiency (DZire diesel gives mileage of 23.4 kmpl) with the operating cost of any small car that makes it more appealing to the Indian customers.”

The industry experts have said that DZire has surpassed all the heights of success, which a sedan can achieve in a highly competitive market like India. According to experts, a higher section of society mulls towards going for a sedan rather than purchasing a hatchback as the former has a three-box design, in which DZire fits completely. This compact sedan was introduced in 2008 and since then has emerged as a bestseller for the auto maker in sedan segment with average monthly sales of around 10,000 units. Interestingly, the success of DZire can also be linked with the fact that Maruti Suzuki is rejoicing with a backlog of 27000 units of the sedan, which will take the auto maker a few couple of months to clear the bookings.
