Datsun has been Nissan’s most successful venture in India, spearheaded by its compact hatchback, the Datsun Redigo. The Nissan subsidiary is planning to introduce the bigger 1.0-litre engine in the Redigo in July and might also plonk the AMT in it.

The Redigo has been built on the Renault Kwid platform but adopts the urban hatch design styling unlike the crossover-like looks of the Renault. As of now, the Datsun Redigo gets the 800cc three cylinder engine that develops 52bhp of power and 72Nm of torque and comes mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

The 1.0-litre petrol engine that will be added to the line-up is a four cylinder 67bhp petrol engine which is mated to a five –speed manual along with the option of a five-speed automated manual gearbox. The bigger engine will be offered only on the top-spec T trim and should ideally be priced between Rs 4 - 5 lakhs, ex-showroom, Delhi.

The Redigo 1.0-litre will compete with the Renault Kwid 1.0-litre and the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 amongst the entry level hatchbacks. While some dealers have already started accepted bookings for the Redigo 1.0-litre, the official bookings will begin in the first week of July with the launch reserved for the later half of the month.
