      Daimler India to launch six vehicles before the end of 2012

      Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Pvt. Ltd., the wholly owned subsidiary of the Germany based Daimler AG has announced the launch of six new vehicles across various volume segments by the end of the current year under its ‘BharatBenz’ truck marque in India. The company has however, declined to mention the pricing details but has disclosed that the prices will be highly competitive and the vehicles will be value for money.

      The company had inaugurated its production plant at Oragadam at Chennai and had intended to launch 17 trucks comprising of light and heavy duty trucks across 9 to 31 tonnes capacity in the next 18 months.

      Mr. V R V Sriprasad, Vice-President (Marketing, Sales and After-Sales), DICV, was quoted as saying, "The first product will be a 25 tonner rigid truck 2523, with 230HP. It will be followed by a 2523 construction vehicle -- a fully built tipper."

      He further detailed that even a 31 tonner (Gross Vehicle Weight) GVW with 230HP would be launched by the end of the current year. The company is also planning to roll out a nine tonner and a twelve tonner truck range by December 2012.

      Mr. Sriprasad commented that the production capacity at its Chennai’s plant operative on a single shift basis is 36,000 units annually but by 2015, the company is determined to double it to full capacity. While speaking about the sales volume growth of 2,00,000 units witnessed during the global crisis in 2008, he clarified that , "For the volume we are targeting in first year, these ups and downs (uncertain market conditions) are part and parcel of our industry. We see in the next few years it will reach to 500,000 units from the present 300,000 units..."

      Daimler
