German car makers Mercedes Benz and Audi have posted record sales in the Indian market by crossing the 2200 units mark in the first quarter of 2012. Mercedes Benz India, the wholly owned subsidiary of German auto maker Mercedes Benz, did not disclose the sales figures for the three months individually. However, it reported that it has marked highest sales ever for the month of March as well for the first quarter of a year. The German car maker has recorded a growth of 6.9 per cent in the Indian auto market by selling a total of 2283 units.

As far as last year's figures are concerned, the company sold around 640 vehicles in January, 662 vehicles in February and 833 vehicles during the month of March 2011. Thus, the consolidated sales of Mercedes Benz stood at 2135 units during the first quarter of 2011. Though the sales figures of the company stand in Q1 of 2012 stand close to 2300, a major threat looms over it in the form of compatriot rival Audi.

The German luxury auto maker Audi has reported its highest monthly sales ever in the Indian auto market for the month of March 2012. The figures stated by the company for the first quarter of 2012 amount to 2,269 vehicles. As far as individual sales of the months are concerned, the company sold 667 units in January, 600 units in February and 1002 units for the month of March. It rolled out the stupendous volumes despite being a late entrant in the domestic market, which will soon pose a problem for Mercedes Benz.

Owing to these figures, it can be clearly seen that both Mercedes Benz India and Audi India are striving hard to strengthen their positions in the Indian auto market. If sales figures of the luxury arm of Volkswagen continue at the same pace, it will soon win the battle for India's premium car market. According to analysts, the first quarter of 2012 is expected to be the last time when sales of Mercedes Benz surpassed Audi in the Indian market, at least for some time. Sales of cars in India are not expected to slow down despite a rise in taxes levied by the national government in the 2012 Budget, thus making India crucial for the plans of both the companies.
