The 2017 Audi A3 has been launched in India at a price of Rs 30.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The mid-life update to the entry-level sedan includes a revised powertrain and a few cosmetic changes. The biggest change in the new A3 is the petrol powertrain. The modern and frugal 1.4-litre engine replaces the old 1.8-litre engine. The cosmetic update includes a single-frame grille upfront with reworked LED headlamps both of which are cued from the bigger A4. On the inside, the cabin remains thoroughly premium carrying forward all the features and creature comforts that marked the old A3. Now, with the updated A3, Audi intends to spark a growth in sales along with strengthening its footing in the Indian market.  Here is a competition check on how it fares against its adversaries.

      Volvo V40

Volvo updated the V40 range in December last year, and with it the Scandinavian now gets the newly adopted Thor’s Hammer headlamp and a plethora of equipment. The V40 is available with only one diesel engine with an automatic transmission. The power output of the diesel Volvo is slightly higher than the Audi, but the A3 scores brownie points with the petrol powertrain. However, the V40 is a lot more affordable than the Ingolstadt sedan, even the Cross Country variant.

      Mini Cooper

In the price range of the new A3, the British carmaker presents the Cooper with the five door option. Though in a different body style, the Cooper is available with a diesel powerplant. But if you want some fun, the two-door Cooper S has got some serious horsepower, but loses out on brownie points because of its less-than-practical ensemble. The Mini is cheaper than the Audi and makes a lot of statement on the road compared to the subtle A3. Apart from the Cooper, the Countryman and the Clubman are also an option for the price of the new A3.

      Mercedes-Benz CLA

The updated Audi A3 has already acquired an arch-enemy - the recently launched Mercedes-Benz CLA facelift. Both these compact sedans with premium German badges are aimed towards the ever-growing number of young buyers. The CLA is a tad bigger and also heavier with a bigger boot, but the A3 has better power figures. Both cars available in petrol and diesel options with automatic transmission. However, even after the hike in prices of the updated A3, the CLA is more expensive of the two.
