In the recent past, the compact Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV) segment has been gathering momentum in the Indian car market. The result can be seen in the sales figures of companies like Ford and Renault, which have virtually reinvented themselves in India by launching the EcoSport and the Duster, respectively. Cars like Duster and EcoSport have taken the Indian car market by storm and are constantly ringing the sales registers for their respective companies. One of the main reasons for such a good performance by both the vehicles can be attributed to their superior engines, which have been appreciated by critics and buyers alike. Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport are available in both petrol and diesel fuel options and carry distinctly tuned engines. The following is a detailed comparison between the engines fitted in Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport.

Talking about the Ford EcoSport first, the car is offered in three engine options out of which two are petrol and one is diesel. The petrol versions of EcoSport are available in 1.0-litre EcoBoost and 1.5-litre TiVCT powertrain options. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine of Ford EcoSport has a displacement of 999 cc and a compression ratio of 10:1. In terms of output, this engine generates power that equals to 123 bhp and has the capacity to reach top torque of 170 Nm. As claimed by the company, the EcoBoost engine gives exceptional mileage statistics owing to its uniquely design. The EcoBoost drivetrain equipped Ford EcoSport has the ability to give an average of 18.9 kmpl. Furthermore, emission levels of this engine stand quite low at 126 g CO2 per km.

Apart from the EcoBoost engine, Ford EcoSport is available in a 1.5-litre TiVCT powertrain option, which has displacement of 1499 cc. With this engine, the car generates 110 bhp of peak output along with 140 Nm of top torque. The compression ratio of this engine stands at 11:1. Notably, the 1.5-litre TiVCT variant of Ford EcoSport is available in both manual and automatic transmission options. The manual variant is equipped with a 5-speed transmission system whereas the automatic version gets a six-speed dual clutch system.

On the other hand, the diesel versions of Ford EcoSport are powered by the 1.5-litre TDCi unit that has a compression ratio of 16:1. This engine has a capability to reach a maximum power of 89 bhp while generating up to 204 Nm of torque. The diesel variant of Ford EcoSport is available is only in manual transmission option and the introduction of an automatic version is doubted as of now.

Coming to the engine options of Renault Duster, it is available in both petrol and diesel variants. The petrol version of Duster is equipped with a 4-cylinder 1.6-litre K4M engine that is capable of generating maximum power of 102 bhp alongside 145 Nm of torque. This engine gets a 5-speed manual gearbox that transmits the power to the rear wheels. The diesel version of Renault Duster is offered in a 1.5-litre dCi K9K engine that comes in differently tuned options, which deliver 83 bhp and 108 bhp of peak output. In case of the 83 bhp version, a 5-speed manual transmission is given whereas the 108 bhp guise gets a 6-speed manual gearbox.

After putting facts into perspective and analysing the overall competition between Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster in terms of engine, a clear winner cannot be pointed out. As both the vehicles are provided with different specifications and options, it is hard to judge a clear winner. However, it can be said that the diesel version of Renault Duster clearly overpowers its counterpart. While in case of petrol engine, Ford EcoSport maintains a slight edge over Renault Duster owing to its availability in two options.
