The Indian subsidiary of the American auto giant, General Motors is gearing up to revamp its whole portfolio in the country owing to the dipping sales percentage recorded in 2011 followed by 11 percent plunge down in sales in first half of 2012. In a bid to take the centre-stage in the Indian auto market, the company is streamlining plans to reorganise its product line in India and capture the demand of the fuel price and interest rate conscious buyers.

The automaker will be strategically introducing Chevrolet Sail U-VA in the premium hatchback segment during the festival season this year followed by an entry-level sedan version based on the same platform. These new models will be launched as a replacement for the Aveo U-VA hatchback and Aveo sedan, which has recorded highly diminishing sales since last year.

Mr. P. Balendran, Vice-President, General Motors India, commented, “The only way to create demand in a sluggish market is by introducing new and exciting products. The consumer is showing a preference for diesel vehicles due to the price differential between the two fuels. We are looking at entering new segments which are showing traction with both petrol and diesel offerings to build up volumes and grow with the market in the coming months.”

The company has already commenced with its product line realignment plans with launch of Tavera BS IV, revamped version of Captiva and new and improved diesel powered Cruze in this year. In the second phase of 2012, in addition to the Sail range, GM is also expected to roll out next gen Spark small car, upgraded version of Beat along with new MPV, Enjoy that will hit the market by December.
