Chevrolet's compact SUV in the works?

General Motors is working on an all-new compact SUV, which is likely to be launched by the end of 2017 or early 2018. At the 2014 Delhi Motor Show, General Motors unveiled the Chevrolet Adra compact SUV concept. It is expected that the production-spec model would be launched in the market; however, few reports suggest that the vehicle will be based on an all-new platform.

Meanwhile, Jaime Adrila, president of GM South America confirmed that the new compact SUV will most likely be based on the Adra concept. The new SUV will rival against the likes of hugely popular Ford EcoSport and upcoming SUVs from Hyundai, Honda, Mahindra and Tata Motors.

General Motors has another compact SUV, the Trax, which is on sale in the South American markets. But the vehicle is longer than 4 metres, and it would be difficult for GM to price it aggressively here. Therefore, the Adra-based SUV will make more sense for the Indian market.

The exact engine specifications of the SUV are yet to be announced, but it is expected to be offered in both petrol and diesel guise. The diesel model is likely to get a smaller than 1500cc motor, while the gasoline version is likely to be 1.2-litre turbocharged unit. Gearbox options include a five-speed manual and an automatic transmission.
