In the recent past, the Indian car market has witnessed the growing demand for executive sedans. Owing to this, major companies like Hyundai, Chevrolet, Toyota and Volkswagen have introduced their numerous vehicles in executive sedan segment. The companies have been actively competing with each other so as to gain a considerable chunk of the market share. Now with the launch of updated Chevrolet Cruze, General Motors is aiming to further increase its holding in the respective segment. Whereas on the other hand, Hyundai Elantra poses a serious challenge for its rivals as the car has been appreciated by Indian audience. So to assess the rivalry between both the cars, a competitive analysis has been carried out.

Talking about the engine configurations first, Hyundai Elantra is offered in petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol variant gets a 1.8-litre VTVT motor having 148 bhp of power and 177 Nm of torque output while the diesel variant is comes equipped with a 1.6-litre CRDi engine that produces 126 bhp of power and 259 Nm of torque while displacing 1582 cc. In terms of transmission, the car gets both manual and automatic gearbox options. Coming to engine performance of Chevrolet Cruze, it is powered by a 2.0-litre VCDi unit that gives away 164 bhp of power and 380 Nm of torque. The car is available in manual and automatic transmission options with 6-speed gears. With the availability of Hyundai Elantra in both forms of fuel, it has a slight advantage over Cruze but the sedan of General Motors generates an enormous amount of power and torque, which is quite high as compared to same segment cars.

While in case of design appeal, both the cars carry distinctive design appeals as Elantra borrows its looks from the fluidic design portfolio adopted by the company on most of its models. While on the other hand, Cruze has got wider dimensions that gives a masculine look to the car. The design philosophy that is followed in Chevrolet Cruze gives a sense of conventional General Motor car, having wider bonnet and extended dimensions. So it would be very hard to name a particular car between the two as both the design elements appeal to different set of masses. In terms of interior quality and equipment, Hyundai Elantra scores high on its competitor as it gets dual-tone dashboard alongside the instrument panel that illuminates in blue as compared to the dull black cabin of Cruze.

In terms of pricing, Hyundai Elantra carries a starting price of Rs. 12.8 lakh that further rises till Rs. 16.16 lakh for top-end trim. Coming to Chevrolet Cruze, it is offered in three trims levels with entry level LT priced at Rs. 13.75 lakh, LTZ at Rs. 15.25 lakh and LTZ AT at Rs. 16.15 lakh (all figures are ex-showroom). As evident, there is not much to choose between the two as both the cars carry almost similar price tags.
