The Indian subsidiary of the US based leading car maker General Motors is all set to display an electric version of its Beat hatchback in India. The new Beat electric has been developed in-house by GM, in partnership with its global technical teams. The car will be showcased in last week of this month.

According to recent media reports, the new Beat electric will carry a capability of running 130 km in a single charge and its battery will take about 8 hours to charge fully. The electric model of the Beat is expected to produce about 60 bhp of power, making it as powerful as an average conventional petrol run car in the market.

According to a statement given to Business Line, a senior GM official said, “The plan is to just showcase our technology and organize test drives for a few people. The vehicles will be assembled here from parts designed and sourced globally. We are not looking to launch this immediately as we do not have the right charging infrastructure for EVs in this country as yet.”

While commenting on the company’s upcoming Beat diesel, Mr Karl Slym, President and Managing Director, GMI, “We have had a miss in the mini-car segment by not having a diesel option. We expect this variant to garner a 70 per cent share of the total sales of the car.”
