      Chennai to Emerge as the Worlds Largest Automobile Manufacturing Centre

      The Chennai region is all set to become the world’s largest automobile manufacturing centre as Indian auto giant Mahindra & Mahindra and an Indonesian group are gearing up to establish their manufacturing facilities in the state. Moreover, another global car maker (name hasn’t been revealed) is also in talks with the state government to set-up its manufacturing facility in the state. With these new production facilities, the total production of the Chennai Region is expected to reach-up to 2.2 million vehicles per annum, as per a statement given by Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said on Thursday.

      While inaugurating the Rs.2,100 crore Apollo Tyres factory near Chennai, Mr. Stalin said, "We are in the final stage of discussions with a global automobile major for setting up a car plant near Chennai with a capacity of 300,000 cars with an investment of Rs.4,000 crore.”

      He added that M&M has decided to establish its 150,000 units per annum sports utility vehicle plant near Chennai at an outlay of Rs.1,800 crore. According to government officials, the M&M plant is set to come at Cheyyur.

      Further informing about the upcoming facilities in the City, Mr. Stalin said that a tractor plant and a tractor component plant will be set up by Sundareshwarar Alloys and Steels (a unit of Indonesian group Texmaco) at Gangaikondan at an outlay of Rs.1,000 crore. "In tyre manufacturing also, we have succeeded in attracting major investments from companies like Michelin, JK Tyres, MRF, ATC and Apollo Tyres. The total installed capacity in tyre manufacturing in Chennai region is set to exceed 1,600 metric tons per day. This will make Chennai the largest tyre manufacturing centre in the country and one of the largest in the world," he said.
