As part of development initiatives undertaken by the recently elected central government, Nitin Gadkari, Union minister of road transport and highways said that the government working on a process to implement a new law wherein the Regional Transport Offices (RTO) may be scrapped. Instead, a new and efficient alternative system shall be in place in the coming months.

As quoted by sources, at the J S Karandikar memorial lecture organized by the Pune Union of Working Journalists (PUWJ), Nitin Gadkari said, “There are some outdated laws and systems which need to be scrapped. Systems like RTO's will soon be abolished; there is no need for RTOs. We have prepared a law which will be introduced soon to replace RTOs.” The new system shall utilize latest technology to nab the traffic violators and not the disciplined motorists in the country.

On numerous instances country citizens have complained of harassment by the local RTO's, speaking more on the situation, Gadkari added, “Tithe Laxmi darshanacha khel chalto (money rules there). Under the system, you will be served a notice at your doorstep if you break a traffic rule. And if you go to court against the notice and lose the case, you will have to pay three times the fine," he said. The government has been chalking out an effective plan that shall improve traffic situation in urban areas. The Indian model shall be designed based on traffic models in the UK and other developed countries.

Speaking on hurdles and opposition faced from NGO's and other social organization, Gadkari questioned them saying, “There are microscopic minorities that stop ongoing works and get excessive coverage in the media. With such a mentality, how can we get investments and move forward?” If the plan has been well implemented it is expected to bring down corruption and ease life for an everyday commuter.
